I notice a bit of whine from my transfer case in the 20-30mph range if i'm just cruising (no acceleration or deceleration). I think I first noticed it around 40K miles when I got rid of those noisey Goodyear Wranglers!. It has not changed as the truck has gotten older, so I am assuming that it is not an issue. I now have 116K miles.

I have it too, but I have only had it 2 years. It has been the same all the way through. I get it under light acceleration, but it goes away if I let off the gas. Not sure what to do to fix it. I have 140K on mine now. Well, I should this week anyway...

Interesting. I seem to have the same thing in my 98 DiscoI just recently bought. Usually hear it when I hit about 50mph and the sound will slowly diminish as I let off the gas. My Disco runs just fine. I've seen this question asked frequently and I'm beginning to think it's a typical Disco sound. Seems like a lot of people experience the same thing. Haven't seen a solid answer on whether it could be transfer case, diff., etc.....

All Disco t/cases have a little whine to them based on the all gear design and and angle of the gear teeth. Keep your gear oil changed and this will keep the noise down a little.
