Have you had your front drive shaft rebuilt installing new u-joints in the double cardon? This is a common problem with D2's, you can't grease the old u-joints and they get noise then fail, sometimes taking the tranny with them.

yes it has a new driveshaft in the front greaseable u-joints, i have not had it long, but the whine has me puzzled, how bad are the transfer case's in these for noise??

The t/cases are pretty good, have few problems and do have a slight klunk and a little whine.
How long has yours been making noise? Are you sure it is not one of the belt pulleys or the tensioner?

i have only put about 1200mi on it , but it has 157,000 mi on it i was a ASEtech at Ford for 4.5yrs, but i have not had a chance to check it out real good, but it is a gear whine or bearing whine i just can't pin point it because it has to be in gear under accel. the rear seal on the transfer case leaks, got anyideas the rover is in excellant shape, very well took care of , that is why the whine kind of puzzles me??

My '99 also makes a similar "whine". At highway speeds,if i'm tryingto maintain speed, andthe engine isn't putting power to the wheels, just beforeI completely let off the gas a whining noise comesfromeither the tranny or transfer case (I think). So i'm interested to seewhat your diagnosisis.

Mine has about 115k on it, but i just got it a year ago. Don't know if the tranny has ever been serviced, but on my next oil change i'm gonna do it. If the service doesn't fix it, i'll probably just live with it for now, i hope it's a typical rover noise.
