Default Whine when on long hills or off roading protional to RPM?

Hey guys my D2 has had this whine going on for 20000mi or so, basically when I am pushing the engine offroad or on a long hill I get a whine that is proportional in noise with my RPM. If I give the car a break for a bit it will go away. I don't think it is the powersteering pump because it appears to be lower in the engine bay so I am thinking it is the water pump. Does anyone have any insight into this?

could be your transfer case. check the oil level and quality. if level and quality are good you can live with the sound or switch to a good quality synthetic gear oil.

I doubt that because after offroading, I can be parked and blip the throttle and I hear it. It is in the front driver side of the engine bay down low it seems. It is definitely something on the serpentine belt.

prob just a pulley bearing. pull the belt off and start spinning and rocking pullies. when you come to one that doesn't spin freely or has play back and forth you've found the culprit

Or one that spins too freely. If they spin for more than a second or so, then there is not much grease left inside. You can carefully pop the seal and add more or just replace the bearing.

Are you in low range?


You have a geared transfer case. It's "supposed" to whine when you are off-road. The old straight-cut geared cases used to whine much louder, but ours is helically cut, so it's muffled compared to the old CJ I used to have.

Listen to this, is this your sound, you can hear it mainly at the 1:15 mark when he revs it up, and again at 2:12 when he revs it waaaay too high:


Like I said, growing up in our CJ7 you would hear this whine all the time in 4-low with straight cut gears. When you'd rev over the sand (prior to going into high range), or descending a huge steep slickrock hill, the gears would whine. The current jeeps are Chain driven and the awesome whine is gone. In fact, when I purchased my D2, I put my camera down at my feet near the tranny tunnel and recorded the faint whine on a downhill decent and sent it to my Jeep buddies because they miss that whine.

So if that is the whine you are talking about, then it is normal. Although it is probably a good idea to check your t-case oil or change it if you have never done it. Enjoy.

If it's the gear-whine from the T-case you will never hear it at idle because they aren't spinning.
