Just wondering what the overall idea was behind only lifting the rear rather than modern LRs where all four corners lift.

Load leveling, heavy cargo, or a trailer = it’ll still keep the rear of the D2 at the proper height.

Because the rear is the only place where the weight on the axle will change significantly. Having air on all four corners is honestly more of a comfort thing, with adjustable height for on/off-road driving being a secondary benefit, although my understanding when they put it on the LR3 was that it needed the adjustable height to meet crash test requirements at certain speeds.

It was for market differentiation. Back then, the Range Rover had full air suspension, and the Disco had only rear self-leveling. As mentioned by others, there are benefits to having rear self-leveling, but not as many benefits as popping for the Range Rover with front and rear self-leveling.

SLS was usually on the 7 seat models, so when you loaded up the very rear seats the vehicle would still set level. I have it and mine still works fine.
