Default wierd overheating problem

hello

i have a 98 land rover disco with 138,000 miles. the other day i was crusing along about 55-60 with A/C (not recycled A/C) on, when i noticed my temp gauge starting to climb close to the red. i pulled over to the side of the road. i raised the hood, antifreez/water in the rez, nothing on the ground. i though perhaps my thermostat was sticking. got back in vehicle and noticed gauge was reading normal. i drove it and through all gears temp gauge normal, once i got to high gear (50-55 mph), this time A?C off, it started to climb again. when i slowed to pull over a second time, i watched gauge. as i slowed, down went the gauge. i was about an hour from home, ran heat full blast with windows down and it never climbed again even at speed. my mechanic suggested therm was sticking and wanted to pull it out and let me run it to see if that was the problem.

i have a 1968 chevelle w/ big block and if i had a overheating problem (which i did), it was sittiing in traffic without a shroud, it would always go down once i was moving, plus, if the thermostat was "stuck" why only in high gear and not all the time? so this just goes against all i know.

any suggestions?
thank you,
chad

I would suggest you go find a good radiator shop and have them check to see if you coolant flow thru the radiator is restricted.
In the mean time don't allow the engine to keep reaching up to that hot range or you'll be buying a new block.
