Hello all. Im pretty new to the Land Rover world, but not to off-roading. I just bought a 2004 Discovery and have started to build it.

One item I am looking to remedy is placing a winch on/in the front stock bumper. I know- just buy a metal one.... but I am out of money after buying tires/suspension/winch/under body armor/rims and other things.

I have looked at previous posts and the closest I have seen is the winch being placed in front of the bumper, as in the G4 style ( picture below). I am wondering if its possible to mount the winch inside the bumper and be able to access the winch controls for a discrete square cut into the top if the bumper, and of course an area cut in the face for the fairlead. ( photo below).

Any help is much appreciated. Photos of this being done would be great too !

DAP/Bearmach Hidden winch install

The guy used a Bearmach hidden winch bracket made in the U.K.

I suggest getting a steel bumper first such as a Terra Firma or Tactical Fab for just a few hundred $ more and it will be winch ready. If you are going off-roading where a winch may be needed, there is a strong possibility the plastic front bumper will get torn up. I am recommending this route as I had seriously contemplated going with my original plastic bumper and hidden winch route.

 

Thanks guys for the feedback. It probably is penny wise pound foolish not to drop the cash on a steel bumper. I work near Atlantic British's east coast shop once a month, I may just go pick one up and save the cash on shipping.
