Wondering about a temp gauge going into summer.

The only bad thing about relying on the scan gauge or the ultra gauge is they are dependant on the factory sensors working correctly.
If your factory oil pressure or coolant temp sensor fails you are in the dark and don't really know what the status is and should shut down.
With using a seperate system you have the redundancy of separate transducers.
Lets say your oil pressure light comes on (This would never happen) and you look at your aftermarket guage and see that all is well, you now know your oil pressure switch is bad and you could continue driving. Otherwise your dead on the side of the road wondering if you really have pressure.

I was thinking along the same lines about having separate gauges to really know. But, on the other hand, I'm thinking the Ultra Gauge type set up would have enough info to properly rule out a bad sensor, etc. For example, you see oil temps rising, you could quickly see the actual numbers of the coolant temps, oil pressure, etc. Sure as heck better than having nothing extra I suppose!

$24 Cheap *** elm327 bluetooth obd2 dongle and the Torque app for your android phone ($4.99). You get a full set of gauges, fault code reader, and you can set a temp alarm on your gauge so you get an audio alert when you are hot. It's pretty awesome.
Oh, and just FYI, you can configure the many screens any way you want. I have one whole screen dedicated to a digital coolant temp gauge. You have just about every thing the computer manages available. You could set up 8 mini gauges all watching fuel trim on each cylinder. Get realtime feedback on how your engine is running.

To be 100% fair, sometimes the Bluetooth connection takes a dump and I have to restart the app. Of course, it does rely on existing temp and pressure probes so you are still stuck with hoping that they are functioning correctly.
