20-50 Castrol has its use. I used to use it in an old-skool built SBC. At the same time there was a Pontiac V6 in my extended family that had a rod bearing go. Swapped 10-40 or whatever was in there for 20-50 and it quieted down for over a month. When it did get louder, I found some 90 weight Kendall or something (motor oil not gear oil). Even after running a bad bearing for a month, it was silent and smooth like butter. That kept it going for another couple months. It was not the kind of engine you rebuild. I think whoever bought it swapped the motor out from another beater in front of their house. Obviously, the buyer was made aware of the problem (but that 90W could have been used to rip someone off too).

I've run 0W as well. It will make a perfectly good running motor louder and you'll hear all kinds of noises that weren't there before. Doesn't mean it isn't working, but it definitely doesn't dampen the sound as much.

The moral of the story is if you don't want to HEAR the problems, just use a thick oil. It doesn't mean they're not there, but now you won't hear them anymore and it will seem like everything is great. You might even believe it, and for most people that's good enough.
