You saved my Rover, driveshaft and p0306 related
Been a lurker for several years, finally signed up the other day, mainly to search on P0306 obd code.
Followed the most popular suggestion and changed wires on my 99 Disco II. Sure enough, the skipping is gone and code cleared so far. Plugs going in this weekend.
While I was under there I checked the cardan joint, and it was spitting metal out just as this site warns. Have had the Rover for 4 years (getting ready to hit 99,999 mi) , just use it for trips. Glad I caught it in time.
Where can I find a complete front driveshaft? Tried Tom Woods, any others, or would a commercial driveshaft shop do just as well as an online source?
I am a mechanic by trade, but have had bad experiences with cardan joints in the past, would rather let someone with the right tools handle it.
Thanks for sounding the warning, it will keep my Rover on the road another 100K miles.

One of the strongest drive shaft comes from Bill Davis at Great Basin Rovers in Salt Lake City where they offer 2 different styles depending on the type of wheeling you do.
Another great drive shaft comes from British Parts of Utah, both of these come with a servicable centering ball also.

Would advise against an oem unit from the boneyard. It will have same problem with splitting, plus most salvage yards use large forklifts to move the land whale carcasses, resulting in bent shafts.
Had my shaft rebuilt and balanced for $200, got it back at closing today. Installed it and tested, it is as smooth as glass. Very happy a local shop could do it and guarantee it.
Now to swap out that 14 year old rubber flange thing holding the rear driveshaft.
