Default zddp in oil

i am not attempting to start a oil war here but i probably am. here is the question up for debate zddp in oil

http://www.amsoil.com/techservicesbu...t%20tappet.pdf

rovers have old tech and new tech whats too much of this additive for the cats and o2 sensors. i know the old std was 1200ppm new oil is much lower. Rotella is above 1200ppm i will probably buy the higher content amsoil as i have have had really good results with thier oil. can anyone make a convincing argument that the higher levels will be really bad on the cat and o2 sensor ? any thoughts or words of wisdom to dicues or share ?

But from a different viewpoint, would you rather change an O2 sensor - or internal engine parts? I'll stick with Rotella.

Interesting topic. Subscribed.

I have a very good friend who has a PhD in Chemistry is a chemical engineer and holds multiple patents in the emission control catalyst reduction field. Show off. I'll pick his brain next time i see him and post back. It'll cost me a few pints, but it'll be an interesting conversation and well worth the hangover.

great idea a chemist would be good here the results i am looking for is is there a curve on wear vs ppm and a projected sensor life vs ppm and lay them on top of each other i would really prefere to protect my cam and lifters from wear and was looking in the 1400ppm range. i also dont want to replace the 02 every 10k miles

Here is my experience with to much ZDDP...Mobil 1 used to sell their "Extended Performance" oils, I used them in the Rover and my wifes turbo Volvo.
In the Rover you could see all of the zinc coating everything on the outside of the engine, every oil soaked gasket, every vacuum line...all had a silverish hue to them where they joined.

On the Volvo it clogged the PCV system, which was $300 just in parts and another 8 hours in my garage.
Can I say for 100% that is what clogged the PCV system? No. But it was fine before hand.
I have long since stopped using that motor oil.

Pick a motor oil you like, run it for 3,000 miles, 500 miles out order a engine oil sample kit, Blackstone Labs sells one.
You take a sample of your oil, send it in, they lab test it for wear and contaminants and then tell you if you should use a different oil, change it sooner or later, etc.

I have no idea what the levels were, but they stopped selling it.
It was rated for 15,000+ miles between oil changes.
