ZF Auto failure
And I see that I didn't close this thread either. After replacing the rebuild kit, of course the shop promptly couldn't get the engine to start. Cranked fine. That was a dead CPS, IIRC; I have to go back and look at the paper work.
They flew in the master from the LR dealership on the other side of town, who used to work for them; it was kind of a long, drawn-out (read: 3 weeks) fiasco. But they did an *amazing* amount of free labor, and in the end, only charged me for the rebuild they originally quoted. So we will call Sam and his boyz at the Clearwater/Countryside Aamco stand-up guys, and it's been running, and shifting, just fine since. Better, in fact; some things I thought might be engine problems were clearly tranny trouble.
I have always wondered why Sport mode doesn't make the transmission hold in gear longer on acceleration -- I expected "doesn't shift until you back off the pedal or approach redline", and I am *hard pressed*, off the line, to see even 4000rpm (though it will break that in a top-gear kickdown at 55), but it drives well enough, so I don't really care much.

Wow, this was quite the saga, glad to see it all sorted!
With regard to sport mode, at WOT (wide open throttle), shifts will happen at 5k in 1st and 2nd for sure. I've never had a need to WOT shift from 3rd to 4th, so I can't say if the same holds true.
