I understand the principle - but when I go to change lanes and overtake on the motorway - the system pulls me back in and interferes with the overtaking

 

It won't do that if you use your signal to indicate the lane change. There is also a setting where you can change it to notify you and vibrate but not actually resist the movement. It will also allow you to override the assistance if you persist in making the lane change.
