Default 02 Freelander Trans Noise?

When the vehicle is cold and placed in reverse there is spinning noise that sounds like a bad bearing someplace. When placed in neutral or park the noise slowly stops and when placed in drive there is no noise. Once the vehicle is hot I dont hear this noise at all. The vehicle has 67,000 miles and the trans. was dealer serviced at 53,000. The noise has become more prevalent over the last few months but it started soon after the tranny was serviced. Could I be low on fluid or something more serious???

My local mechanic tells me thathe thinks it is a bearing in the IRD unit. Are these common failures?
