2005 Freelander - No Key or FOB
I have a 2005 Freelander that I purchased from an auction at the auto impound. The local dealer is asking about $300 to cut the keys (based on VIN) and program it. I'd need to tow the car to the dealer to program it (another $100). Then I would know if this car can actually start and if it has other issues.
I came across a used key+fob on ebay with the key ignition and door locks. I was wondering if I replace the ignition lock would I be able to program the immobilizer to the used key+fob? The transponder code on the key is fixed (non-volatile) so that code will not change, so possibly the immobilizer can be programmed to the used key? Has anyone tried this before?
I appreciate your help.

Unfortunately, the dealer is the only source of keys. They will call BMW in Germany, and the next key or keys will be burned to the chip and the key blanks will be cut. The dealer will scan the car with Testbook T4 or newer software, and remove the missing keys, and insert the new keys. They will then sync the rolling security code to the rest of the system. There is no good way around the immobilizer. There is a coil in the ignition switch that reads the key, it passes the code to the immobilizer, which passes it to the instrument cluster, then to the ECU. If all codes match, ignition goes live. Sorry I don't have better news. But I have been there.
