Default Confused about Snow chains

Hello All,

I am a new owner of an 2000 Freelander with 215-65/ 16 tires. After searching and searching the only thing I have found is that because of the lack of space for the chains in the front I should put them in the back (from the owners manual). My questions are:
1. Has anyone experience with putting them on the front ?

2. I have found a very wide spectrum of chains. Some for "4X4" some not. Does it really matter ?? The "4X4" chains are 4x the price.

I know normally I shouldn't need them, but it is required to have/use them in the Ski regions in Germany and Austria

Thank you for any help you can offer,

Bill

While not on the subject of tires, I noted you have the owner's manual. If you have not already taken advantage of it, the full factory shop manual set is called the RAVE and is a free download below for all Freelanders (and many other ROver models).

I don't have specific knowledge on the Freelander, but there are different types of "chains" out there, to include cables which have a lower profile than an actual linked chain (not to mention V-bar chains). Maybe you could find a set of cables which will clear on the front.

Thanks for the information. Since I will only rarely need them. (In my 25+ years living in Germany now, I've had to put them on only once) I guess I wil just buy a "compact" set of chains to put on the back, to fufill the chain requirement. Anything other than "Normal" chains cost way too much and wouldn't be worth it for me.

Thanks again Guys for the Help

You dont need the 4x4 chains, they are for offroading and are tougher to take the abuse.
