Default High revs on Freelander...

Hi. Can anyone help me? I have two problems with my 1999 1.8 Freelander.
1. Sometimes when I put in the clutch to change gear the revs shoot up very high, this can happen once in a dayand then not happen for a week and then occur nearly all day, almost everytime I go to change gear. Follows no pattern.. ???

2.Somtimes it starts to splutter and chug, and even stops. This usually haappens on damp mornings and gets worse when the engine warms up. They checked it out at the garage when it was there for the 80,000km service but couldn't find anything.

Is it a petrol or diesel, if it is a desiel, then you might want to change the fuel filter.

Also if you are constantly getting high revs try changing or at least cleaning the air filter.
