Cool Service Engine Soon Idiot Light

my 2005 Freelander -52,000 miles. The orange "service engine soon" light came on last month. My dealer sd it could be 1 of 140 things.
I checked the fuel tank seal and it seems to be tight. Since my warranty is up I try to avoid the dealer as they are expensive. My local mechanic did a diagnostics on his machine but it says "Landrover specific" code. I am wondering if it is a milegae reset that only the dealer can reset that is required after say 48,000 mile checkup.

I am in Columbus Ohio and my dealer has been good to me for 4 years. I just hate paying for a diagnostic if I dont have to but I don't like having the light on. My freelander has been a true joy to own with no problems.

Thoughts?

It is not a mileage specific code, you need to get the codes read and get back to us with the 4 digit fault code number so we can help you.

OK thanks Mike- I have an appt this saturday. Gonna cost 115 plus tax to diagnose. When I get the code will they at least reset the light or do I just tell them thanks and go see my mechanic to actually do the work?
I guess it depends what the code comes back as.

dumb question but did you get in for the fuel pump recall.

and if the guy doesn't know a land rover specific code he is not worth going to. Sorry freelanders are a bit more complicated then a disco two and you have to know the system and have access to bulletins and the like.

115 dollars means someone with the right equipment gets the code and has access to the right information.

60 bucks means a crapshoot and tons of parts that may or may not work.
is he gonna fix the car for free if his diagnosis is wrong.
I know these freelanders enough to know what looks bad isnt and what is bad is not known unless you are experienced.

Check-fuel pump recall done OK. I will have the dealer dignose it and get the code and then let you guys know if I am safe going to my mechanic or should I let the dealer do it. Midwest Auto Group/Land Rover Dublin OH is the dealer and they have always done me right.

Thanks-talk to ya Saturday.
