Default 1991 Range Rover classic beach driving

Hello all,

I am currently caught in the struggle to find a land rover that isn't over priced but isn't completely run into the ground. So far i have looked at mostly discos. My search has brought me to a 1991 Range Rover classic, now i was initially against not having an actual diff lock but after thinking it over, and since the Range Rover looks so awesome, i might consider over looking that.

Now my main reason for wanting a Rover is because i am a avid surf fisherman and i need to replace my 96 explorer. Also I don't want to have the same jeep as everyone else on the beach, not that i am against jeeps. I fish the eastern coast of the united states, we have all kinds of sand. My local beach has some of the deepest and softest sand i have ever seen, it's typical to find even the most dependable off road vehicles stuck on any given day. What i am asking is how would a 91 RRC handle deep, soft sand with it's 4x4 system. What about other forms of off roading, I'm not planing on anything crazy but i would like it to be capable if i need it. Would i be better off to continue my search for a Discovery with diff lock or will the 4x4 system on the Range Rover work for me?

Thanks!

I read it, now what? Haha, all I see is the guy got stuck because his diff lock was inop, is that the plot? Are you saying I should get a disco with diff lock but make sure it works or are you saying I should buy a jeep?

One more question. Would a pre 90 Range Rover with diff lock be just as capable as a disco with diff lock? I've heard they have basically the same drivetrain, correct?

The earlier ones are Pre ETC (electronic traction control) and have open diffs in the axles. They take a bit more effort to avoid getting stuck, but they go pretty good if you use a little driving skill. Don't be shy about airing down the tires a lot...
