Default 1998 Range Rover HSE

I would like to first off say Hi to the Land Rover community. I purchased my Range Rover about a month ago. I love it! I have owned several different vehicles (nothing this nice). My father has owned several types of luxury vehicles, Lexus', Porsche, Mercedes AMG, and Hummers. Comparing my 98 to his 00' + I must say I was completely empressed. I am a young man so this was a bit of a stretch for me financially (not the initial cost but the upkeep). I did research and I understood the risks of buying a Rover.

Well about 2 weeks after I owned it the rear view mirror leaked out all the "goo". It is a black oily-tarry substance that is very hard to clean off of your dash. Oh well I just don't have the dimming feature any more, no problem. Then my cruise control goes out, again not a big deal I don't do a lot of long distance driving anyway. One day I hop in my Rover and take off to class, I feel like I am in Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke bouncing all over the place in a low rider. My EAS (Air Suspension) went out. I had no computer errors and I did very little research and figured it was a hose leak or something of that nature. I took it in to the shopfor a diagnosis. The verdict? A new EAS Valve Body and compressor. A $3,000.00 fix ughh.

I took it in to Bob Moore of Oklahoma City. My father stopped taking his Hummer their because of some shadiness. I made the mistake to take mine. After I had my vehicle towed and autorized to fix I called a different Rover dealership a couple of hours away. Sadly after all the work was done I got a quote of $2200.00. When speaking to the other dealership thankfully I was given part prices. I go in to pay and whaa??? The EAS Valve body was $1900.00 and I was quoted $1300.00-$1500.00 from the other dealership. The EAS compressor was quoted at $500.00 and it was priced at $900.00. I bring this to teh attention of the service manager, and he checks with his parts guy and decides to refund me $200.00. Needless to say I will never be taking my vehicle back to Bob Moore of Oklahoma City.

Now to my current problem. My heater is not working properly. It will blow hot air out of the passenger side but not the driver side. It was diagnosed at the service shop as needing a new blender motor. Does anyone know of any common problems or cheap fixes for this? I don't want to shell out another $2,000.00 to fix my heater.

Note: I called the Tulsa dealership and the service guy was great. Within 30 seconds of me telling him the problem I was having with the EAS he made a suggestion that would have been nice at Bob Moore of Oklahoma City. He suggested I get a spring kit. It would be around $1200.00 installed and there are no ride problems. I asked the Bob Moore service employee why he had not mentioned that to me, I got "Because we don't do the spring kits". Well thanks for at least letting me know about that option dear sir.

All in all I love my Rover, I will always be in a Rover.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I also had the same concerns, so before I picked up my '02 HSE I bought an extended warranty for $800.00. This will cover bumper-bumper for 24K miles or 2 years. I am already taking the truck in for work on my climate control and navigation system next week. They also will provide a rental car reimbursement up to $30.00/day.

I was never a big fan of extended warranties, but it seems with the higher end luxury vehicles there are so many electronic gizmo's that go bad.

Also, as far as the coil spring conversion, it will eliminate the expense of replacing your EAS components. But, the ride is nothing close to the air ride you get with the OEM suspension, especially in cornering or going over uneven terrain. My friend converted his '00 Rover to the coil spring kitand he regrets it.

As far as your blend motor, rangerovers.net is a great site for tech help. Here is the section for replacing your blend motor-

In the process of buying 1st Land Rover...saw your post and am wondering if you have located a "qualified" independent Land Rover service option in the OKC area?

Here is an underlying tone, ask on here before you go to the dealership for a fix. The air suspension could have been rebuilt for far less than that.

Blend motors can be fixed as well or at least bought from a qualified used parts dealer. Find a local Rover mechanic that may have worked at the dealer but got tired of screwing people over for repairs and you will do a lot better.

OMG!!!! You spent HOW MUCH?!!!!! Don't mean to explode, but WOW! If I were you, I would get a service manual out and start fixing these little issues yourself, or at least stop taking it to the stealerships. The blend motor failure for the heater is an easy fix, but takes awhile and certainly does not cost as much as you were quoted. EAS compressor and components can be rebuilt or purchased used else where, for considerably less. Cruise control issue is usually due to leaking vacuum lines, just go to an auto parts store and bring a piece of your old vacuum tube in and ask for a few feet of the stuff. I do not mean to preach to you, but please DON'T get robbed anymore .
