Hey a thought, does your have secondary injection? The pump could be going out and that is causing the howling. I am just trying to think outside the box here.

You know it could be Rob, but i seriously don't know if mine has a secondary on it. Do you know the differences on what it would look like verses not? Could you tell by just opening the hood?

I do not know how to tell just by looking at the engine. My Volvo has it and when it went out it would let out a howl when it was starting and then go away since it only used it during start up. I would think though that it would give you a check engine light and a code if it was not working at all, and that the dealer would have been able to figure that one out for you as well.

I am just trying to think of all the things that it could be outside of the normal itmes we always look at.

I was out today looking at a BMW (maybe to buy fix and then sell. It was in really bad shape, so I did not buy it). I noticed a 2002 RR in the corner of the lot and asked what was wrong with it. He said that something was wrong with the secondary air injection. Didn't go into to much detail as to what the symptoms were, but that might mean yours does have secondary air.
