2000 RR with humming noise at 60+ MPH
Hi There,
I have a 2000 Range Rover 4.0 that has a constant humming noise at higher speeds 60+ mph and the same type humming noise when your foot comes off the gas pedal and you are decelerating from 40 mph to 0mph. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time

Thanks. When im on the freeway and on the gas pedal no noise....then when i take foot off pedal humming noise. I played with it pressing the pedal and off the pedal and the humming only comes when off the pedal? Any suggestions? Thank you
probably the rear differential,
jack up the car and check the fluid levels and the color of the dif oil,
drip it onto a black cardboard look at the oil in the sun,
lots of metallic s means something is out of adjustment

So I drained the rear diff like you mentioned and there was lots of metal in the oil. I replaced it with fresh oil. You mentioned something being out of adjustment...what can be adjusted to make the rear diff function properly? Thank you for your time
From what I know, there isn't anything that can be adjusted. A bearing might be on its way out. Unfortunately, the differential will eventually need to be replaced or rebuilt. I had a Discovery do this not too long ago, ended up just selling it so I don't know what it was exactly. But it sounded like it was coming from the forward differential, but either differential could make the noise.

The ONLY adjustment requires the diff pulled out and shims put in to set the gear backlash that is about it. We run a HEAVIER oil in teh quick change on the modified so it does not sing which they will do on some gear sets.
We run Royal Purple OR Vavoline in teh heavier stuff this will cut down a little on the wear but will not cure it.

Now if it was a WHINE then that is the owner worrying how much this is going to cost him!
Open question to the experts: Had ANY shop tried running the car in gear on JACK Stands to find a diff noise? WE do with the modified and it does work. We bought stethoscope for cars and works GREAT a little dangerous so make SURE you understand that part.
