Default 2004 Range rover 4.6 engine replacement

I'm looking for some advice on where to go from here. I own a 2004 range rover 125000 miles. I Was hearing a loud metal ticking/ noise coming from the front of my engine after coming off the freeway. Knowing it didn't sound good, I had it towed to my mechanic. He said that he drained the oil first to see if they would find anything. Sure enough, there was plenty of metal particles in the oil. He's thinking it's the timing chain that went( the area of the noise). He referred me to one other shop, or the dealer since he would not have the tools for the job. One thing is that the truck seemed like it was running fine. Could I possibly be lucky and not have to replace the engine? Anyone here have input on where to go from this situation? How much is it these days on labor for a job like this? I really appreciate anyone's input. I'm completely lost at what to do!

A 2004 range rover shouldn't have a 4.6, it should have a 4.4.

Are you sure you don't have a discovery instead?

Sorry, yes I may have thought wrong. It's the stock engine for a 2004 Range rover.

Shops will charge an arm and a leg. Especially afresh hearing the name Range Rover. I would try to do it yourself. I replaced the head gaskets on my mustang with just a standard tool kit and a few borrowed tools from advanced auto parts.

the first thing you will want to do is find a shop that can do an oil pressure test on that motor, it should not really take a specialist to do an oil pressure test.

Advanced Auto doesn't rent M62 engine tools. If its a timing chain issue, cam tools are required.

Any hopes of salvaging the engine, if it is salvageable, would require you to stop driving it immediately.
