Cleaning Engine

I took my '02 range rover off roading for the first time the other day and my engine is brown. How would I go about cleaning it?

If its a petrol, be careful about where you spray the water! Stay away from the distributor/coil pack/plugs/leads etc.
If its a diesel, just blast away! but be wary of soaking the electrics!
