Hi All,

I am looking at buying a replacement Disco II for one totaled by a drunk driver (not me!). I have found what seems to be a good 2004 at a dealership with low miles (55K). Crawling under it though I found a two minor oil leaks and that the cover for the inspection point on the gear box was missing. Everything inside the case was clean but I am worried about what troubles this could produce. I would like to buy this one as the engine is in the best shape. I have looked at 8 others so far and almost all others have many leaks and condensation and milky goo in oil cap.

Quick advice would be greatly appreciated.

04 Disco is the best year to buy,
it has the locking transfer case,
the inspection cover that is missing is a $ 8.00 part it simply plugs into the hole.
The dealer could prolly get this done for you prior to purchase.
Oil leaks will possibly be the valve covers,
A simple snugging up the fasteners should solve it

What version Disco are you looking at?
S, good, vinyl seats
SE, better leather seats and possibly cold weather package
HSE best, leather seats and heated seats and best stereo

 

By the way, the milky goo you are referring to I see on a lot of LRs and is very common. Mine does it too, and has since I've owned it. It doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, just condensation build up in the engine that just gets burned off and leaves the tail pipe as water vapor. Eventually the cap will be nice and dry, it usually occurs on initial start up. What you want to run away from is if it smells like coolant, or looks like it lol. Any how, good luck on your purchase. And just out of curiosity, how much are they asking for the Disco?
