Default New here, Looking at a range, have a couple quetions.....?

hey everyone, hows it going? my names garrett and im from annapolis maryland..... im looking into buying a new car and have been jumping around with my choices. the cars that have really caught my attention are the range rovers and newer BMWs 745i's. i was almost set on the 745, but im a kid, and only have so much to spend so im more than likely going to have to buy a car with higher mileage, which could be a problem on these cars, but im not sure? my family use to have a discovery, and we had tons of problems, they were all pretty petty, and i've heard the ranges have alot of problems as well. now, i found one close to me in my price range, but it has 99,000 miles. now my questions is, are these cars known to have problems after a certain mileage(the 745i's after 20k were suppose to start getting sketchy) so im curious what id be getting myself into. the transmission was replaced on it 2000 miles ago, and he has the receipts to prove it. anyways, i was curious, do you think its worth getting the car with this many miles on it, i know im going to run into some problems with the truck, but i couldn't see anything much worse than the transmission going bad happening( im a mechanic apprentice, and work at a chevy dealer ship, so i can do alot of simple work myself, also some pretty technical work and i have access to all the tools and car lifts and whatnot, the main thing steering me away from the 745 is that it is basically a computer, and no matter what mechanical skills i have, i would still need special equipment so maintaing the 745i might be out of my range). so im curious as what are the major problems on these cars, im getting the car for a good price leaving me with money leftover as backup cash incae i run across some problems, but if theres some major problems i might not be intrested. anyways, id like to hear what all your exsperiences are with your ranges, and your opinions/thoughts on buying a range with 100,000 miles, by the way, its a 2003. i went to the bmw forums, and they were all arrogant and found my post silly because i didnt use the search function, sorry if that bothers you guys here but im trying to get personal opinions on what you think buying this range with these miles would be, and am curious about issues you've had to do on your range, so thanks in advance and im sorry for wasting forum space and not using the search, but please help me out

I'm not going to comment on the general faults in RR's because you can either do a forum search or research (rangerovers.net has good model year details). On most forums you aren't going to get a good answer unless your question is something new. Regular forum members don't like answering the same questions over and over and over.

I would recommend not buying a 2003 and I personally waited a few years after launch to buy a MKIII. The earlier MKIII's are pretty buggy and, in general, are less reliable then the already questionable Rover reliability.

You mentioned not wanting a 745 because of the electronics. Rovers have similar numerous advanced electronic and electrical systems. Luxury cars in general have more electronic gadgetry though so keep that in mind.

An '03 Rover is likely to be in need or near needing it's air suspension bags replaced. Air suspension is one of the largest "liabilities" on Rovers. Most people simply do not understand or don't want to face the realities of having rubber bladders serve as the suspension system.

Since you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to perform most repairs but parts are still pricey compared to more common vehicles and problems are more common.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

hey, thanks alot for the reply, yes i know use the search but whenever i try i never really seem to find what i want/need unless im chasing an already diagnosed problem if you know what i mean. i think im going to try going with the range rover, even though it somewhat unreliable, the 745i's are suppose to be a steer clear kind of car for the early models. i dont plan on having the car for too long(6-months to a year) so hopefully i dont run across too much in that time. like i said, thanks for the help and ill check that site out. btw, i know the rnage has some gadgets, but compared to the 745, the bmw is basically a computer, everything is controlled electronically all from one area(the idrive system), so if something happens to that, you use loss of nearly everything in the car, thats why it can so catastrophic, the range seems a bit more user friendly. anyways, ill check the site out, and thnx again, have a nice day.

hey everyone, i scored my range rover, picked up an 03 range rover hse, all black with charcoal interior, cold weather options, etc. i love the car. the guy did the coil over conversion because he had rims on the truck, and said he kept having problems with the eas system, i personally think this rides better than my buddies range, its super smooth, and rides superbly, so i was wondering why everyone hates the coil over conversion? also, im having a couple little issues, none of my power outlets work, period, when the car is on or off, anyone have an idea of which fuse it is, theres so many in this god damn car idk where to start(well, i do, and thats the manual, but il have to wait until tommarow). this car is awesome, i absolutely love it and basically stole it. it's and 03 with 100000 miles on it, a little high but the transmission was just rebuilt 2000 miles ago and is under warranty for another 18000, and i got thr car for 14300, so i think i got a good deal. the leather is great, everything is great except the paint on the cupholder, and under the gear shifter showed a bit of wear, so i removed and wet sanded using 2500 grit sand paper, looks great!!!! the only other problem i have is the headlights, it has the bi-xenons, but sometime when i turn them on only the left one turns on, but when i turn it off and back on 2 or 3 times, it comes on and works perfect, any ideas? ill post pictures tommarow, i absolutely love this car!!!!
