Default Question for RR Vets-4.0SE engine Swap

Hi: I purchased a 1997 RR, which has serious engine problems. Leaking head gasket, leads to coolant in combustion chamber, results in shattered piston and the need for a new engine! Current engine is 1997 4.0 SE, I have located an engine from a 1996 Land Rover Discovery (ie Disco), it is also 4.0!
1. Are these two directly interchangeage?
2. Do all external gizmo's bolt on: Alternator, Starter, AC Compressor,Fuel Injection, Heads etc etc.?
3. What is the difference in SMOG non SMOG engines?
4. Any advise for engine swap out?
5. Should I hold out for the optional 4.6 HSE?
6. 4.6 appears to be direct swap with 4.0.??

Words of wisdom, advise, encourgment...greatly accepted!

Best Regards
Dave

call atlantic british and ask for their tech specialist. He can give you the answer. A guy on the phone might be able to as well.

The 4.0L blocks on the P38 RR from 95 to 1999 "GEMS Only" are the same as the blocks on the 96 to 99 Discos. Don't know about the heads and such, but I'm sure they are either the same or very similar. You can use the 4.6 block, but it has to be from a P38 RR. They did not make a 4.6 for the discovery until the BOSCH models. If you want to use a 4.6, you will need to change the BECM parameters to "4.6L" or w/e the setting is.

You should be able to swap them fairly easily. You may need to do the harness swap as well since some of the sensors may be different. You may run into some local smo gissues since the engine would be from an older vehicle so check what you can and cannot do.

When you do it you may want to also swap over the flywheel to make sure it all right and the same as before. I dod not do this on a 4.6 and 4.0 swap and it toasted my transmission.
