My driver side mirror in my 2004 RR is inoperative, but the question I have is with regard to a ratcheing sound in that mirror intermittently when I open the door. It is intermittent with no apparent way of anticipating when it will happen. It seems to happen, I would say, every 3-5 times I open the door, but all of the time when the car sits overnight. I noticed the other day that the ratcheting happened on the driver's side, even when I opened the passenger side door. I understand that the gears in the adjustment break on these cars, but what is it trying to adjust when I open the door? I should also add that when I try to use the controls from within the car, I don't get the ratcheting.

 

Perhaps the electrical cable that goes from door frame to door is shorting or grounding or shorting to another conductor when flexxed.

 

I'm going to have to take it apart. I would think that opening the door, or repositioning it would make a difference, but it doesn't. In fact, the other day I unlocked the door using the key fob (I don't normally lock my doors unless I have something valuable in it) and the ratcheting started as soon as I pushed the button.

 

check to make sure the wiring harness at the door isnt damaged or corroded.

 

Okay. Here is an update. If I manually move the mirror housing forward, then open the door, it doesn't ratchet. The mirror moves further forward. Then I can move it back into position. My theory is that the micro switch thinks the mirror is folded in and tries to move it out. What do you guys think? How hard is it to get to the mounting bolts for the mirror?

I still don't understand why it is time dependant.
