Smile Suspension Rattles on Bumps

2010 RRS 66K miles

A Loud metallic rattle in the right rear on certain bumps. Particularly loud when the windows are open.

I have checked the spare, removed the RR wheel and hit everything in sight with a rubber mallet, but can't find the source.

One observation was that the brake disk pan was closer to the bottom of the brake itself on this side, i bent it back slightly, but no change.

Would appreciate any suggestions...

Default Possible Source...

Just noticed there is a heavy metal part on the end of the frame on either side of the spare wheel. These are fixed, but can swing and hit parts of the frame. Wonder what those are for..

If you can, post a picture of what you are refering too.

As far as possibilities, we usually find rear noises a result of sway bar issues, usually the bushings where it bolts to the frame.

Thanks Teckniker... i'll examine the sway bar bolts and try to snap pictures...

On the heavy metal parts i found this: "black pendulum weights at rear of RRS are to counteract resonate frequency vibrations coming off the frame of the truck."

The weights need to really swing to hit the frame and make more of a clank, so not likely causing the rattle which gets triggered even on some small bumps.

O.K. a friend followed me down a particularly bumpy road and observed that the right rear wheel was chattering wildly relative to the left. This leads us to believe that the damper has failed.

We had removed the left rear wheel and inspected the sway bar bearing which looked good.

It appears to be a failed shock. Noise is getting worse, and a friend drove behind on a bumpy road and observed the RR Wheel chattering.

Wonder how hard it is to replace...

My mechanic found that the rear emergency brake and drum were destroyed and the broken shoe fragments were causing the rattle.

The disks/pads were just replaced by the Dealer 6 months and 1,500 miles ago.

He has found that after replacement, the emergency brake can engage and cause this problem which can be avoided by "programming the unit".
