Default What kind of winch is this?

Anyone know what kind if winch this is? Looks like it functions similar to something called a capstan which is used on boats to take in heavy docking lines.

What was the benefit or was other stuff just not around yet. Thanks!

Yup its a capstan winch, yes other types existed during that time, and the capstan has some interesting benefits

Thats precisely what I was getting at.... There is something to be said about the PTO/ Hydraulic type winches that can run much longer compared to their electric counterparts. What were some of the main benefits of this style of winch? The first and clear one that I can see is in an expedition environment any kind of rope that was around could be used unlike the drum style which has a limited capacity.
