Default $3400.00 estimate repair replace or ditch ?

Trying to decide what to do thought I would bounce it off the fine folks here

99 disco II 135 k mi
My intake and head gaskets are leaking oil and coolant again (had them done at 100k mi at a different shop)
got the quote from my newlocal shop looks like $3400.00 is the repair cost covering
head gaskets w/ new bolts
reman heads (both)
thermostat
universal rad. kit
magnacor wires
plugs
power steering flush
serp belt
water pump
one motor mount
front crank seal
rear flex disc
fluids/sealants

Also has a little knock, most likely needs bearingsaccording to the shop, waiting on an estimate for bearings as well.

So I'm asking myself should I have the work done or buy a new ride? What else can fail after this ? after having this work done am I good to go for another 100k mi can I feel good about road trip to colorado skiing which is 10-12 hours from home?

How long can I go with the leaking gasket?

not looking for definate answers just some opinions

thanks

While that is a lot of work to be done, I don't know if it's $3400 worth. Can you do any of that stuff yourself? How are you with a wrench?

I'm decent with a wrench and have done this kind of work on Jeeps and chevys, but I moved recently and have no access to a shop or even garage I live in an appartment for now. I will do the flex disc myself = $180 parts & Labor
and the wires are fairly new so don't need them= 120.00 parts only

the question that haunts me is whats next

D2,
A good head gasket replacement is about $1400, reman heads are not needed at that mileage.
They are really looking to get rich on you, go get another estimate.

that does sound rather high... especially considering you could buy a rebuilt motor for less and install it and probably come out cheaper...

Problem is they are trying to make the truck new again.
As the owner, he needs to verify what is wrong or not wrong with it and fix it accordingly.

Head gasket was leaking coolant and oil on the right side. I looked back at my records and only the left side was done along with bearings.Thats what I get for trying to save a buck (or 700)when they did theleft side.Anyway took it to my indy rover guy back home and the work was done for about half. I am not implying the first shop was trying to rip me but they "liked to include everthing they might possibly find" in the estimate. Again I liked the shop and feel they were overall honest about what they believed to be the problem.
Work done was head and intake gaskets, trans fluid change and filter kit, front crank seal replacement, new wheel sensor (hard wired), O and theytopped off diffs and trasfer case.

Thanks for all the replys

can't you buy a new/reman motor for slightly over $3000. i'd do the work myself - shop wayyyy over priced.
