Default 04 HSE CD Changer

Hi Guys, I've been through the archives and can't find an answer so I thought I would post my situation. I have an 04 HSE with CD changer in the glove box. The changer will eject the cassette with the ingnition off but once the car is started it won't play cd's or eject. Turn off the ignition and about 50 seconds later the cassette will eject then.

Insert full cassette and turn on igniton, go to CD on the head unit and it says no cassette, or something like that. It doesn't recognize it being loaded and wont play.

I figured it was the changer but now I'm not so sure its not a head unit issue. Its like the changer goes to sleep once the ignition is turned on and wakes back up when turned off, any help would be appreciated.

The factory cd changer is a Clarion, does anyone know if the factory unit can be swapped with a new Clarion changer or has the protocal been changed?

It is most likely the changer. It can be something in the harness but less likely. The head unit is not seeing the changer. It is also unlikely that a clarion will work. Some of the older cars (mercedes, audi, bmw) had alpine and pioneers that were interchangeable but the newer ones are not. A good repair shop should be able to repair it for around $200. I use Jeff's Professional audio repair in Phoenix Arizona. Jeff or Frank will help you out. They have done hundred of mercedes benz changer repairs for the shop I worked for. They also did all our factory warranty work. Good luck.
