1996 starter not turning
Can anyone suggest possible solution to my problem? Rover was cranking and now engine does not turn over. I took starter off and had it tested and it definitely works. (new battery used also) The land rover only makes a clicking noise when I turn key. Anyone know where to begin troubleshooting? Thanks

The starter draws about 300 amps. So a small relay is used to throw 12 volts to that skinny wire on the starter, to engage the solenoid inside. The solenoid does a couple of things, one is to close a heavy duty conatact to put power from that big wire from the battery to the starter windings.
If click is coming from inside the truck it is the starter relay. If under the truck it is the solenoid that is making the noise.
Check battery to frame ground connection. You can test with a battery jumper cable from (-) negative post (clamp over existing connector) to engine block or frame. The negative wire is bonded to the chassis behind the battery (hard to get at without taking out battery) and the big back wire continues to a connection to the frame down by the bottom of the radiator.
The plus battery wire runs directly to the starter. You can bridge that with a battery jumper cable as well for testing.
If connection is just a little dirty, the 300 amps of current flow quickly produces a voltage drop so great that starter won't crank truck.
