Default 4.2 head on 4.0 Disco?

Anyone know if you can use heads from a RR 4.2 motor on a Disco 1 4.0 motor? The Rover was a 1993 LWB and the Disco is a 1997 SE.

Thanks,
Tom

I just check one site and the heads are different in some way, so for the most part, I would say no.

I wonder if its just valve recession or something like that? A guy at Britsh Atlantic told me that the head gaskets are the same so he figures it would work - but thats not much to go on. I am hoping to hear from some that has tried it and has first hand results - otherwise that someone could be me next week letting everyone know if it works or not. Thanks for the quick response. What site did you check?

So I guess you need some heads, if so you might check out this site for good guaranteed used parts.

i put 4.2 heads on 4.0 short block on a 95 range rover and it was absolutly no problem!!! a 4.2 block and a 4.0 block are the same just different piston bore!!!! you should have heads rebuilt at machine shop!! Not expensive!!!!!

Yes, correct head gaskets and new head bolts are the only things nessary . some 4.0 heads do have air injection ports,(VINRange)the only thing you need to look for. Land Rover even had us replace heads on cars that didnt have the bottom row of head bolts, they figured they were not nessary I guess ? I think they ran out of 3.9 heads at the time and issued 4.0's for warranty . cant recall how many were done but they never leaked !
