93 Disco 4WD Instructions
Hi All,
New to the forum as I have just purchased a 93 Disco in pretty great condition (3.5l engine, auto-trans) as a temporary replacement for my Land Cruiser which was set up as a desert rescue vehicle and was stolen in Alexandria, Egypt last December. Recovered the Land Cruiser (stripped down) and am awaiting a total rebuild. In the meantime, I have this Disco as a temporary driver for the next 6-8 months just so I can go get my "sand high". My question here concerns the 4WD gearshift. On the gear stick it shows "Off", "Lock", "L", "N", and "H". Not knowing too much about Disco's, L, N, and H are pretty self-explanatory and I am assuming that this is two wheel drive Lo and Hi, and Neutral. "Lock" I am assuming locks into 4WD. "Off" cuts out the gearbox altogether. In the Land Cruiser I have the option of Low-4 and High-4. I don't know if I have that option here. Any help? Please forgive my ignorance on this, but the previous owner never took the car off the asphalt (that's prolly why it's in great condition with only about 150K Km on it). I was "teethed" in the deserts on Land Cruisers so it is a different school of thought here in Egypt. The Disco was cheaper to purchase at $12K than replacing my 86 Land Cruiser at $30K+. That's how valuable a good 4x4 here is in Egypt. The only drawback to owning a Land Rover here in Egypt is the availablility of repair parts (Have to go the Jaguar dealer in Cairo, pay tariffs, shipping, and maybe a few bribes here and there).
Any info about the 4WD gearstick operation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
WhackdNegypt

Your Discovery is Full-Time 4WD, leave it in "H" for normal street driving. "Lock" is your central differential lock, only engage off pavement.

Thanks for the info Rob. Much appreciated. Took the Disco out into the desert and mountains behind Hurghada yesterday along the Roman era Porphory Road. I must admit that I was impressed with the way the car performed over 65 kilometers, each way, of varied terrain (Soft sand, hard pack, rocks, hills, muddy sand at an oasis). Only locked the 4WD just to see how the car responded. The rest of the time was spent in "H". Looking forward to more adventures with the Disco!
