'96 Discovery: Revs normally but loss of power
Driving along normally (35mph), suddenly engine loses power. RPMs were normal (engine would rev), but the Discovery would only go about 10-15mph no matter how high the RPMs.
I limped to a place to pull over and smelled a strange smell (something burning?) I parked vehicle and turned off engine.
Started engine again (no problem), but brake pedal was locked stiff and vehicle would not shift out of park.
Got out and noticed fluid on ground that came from right front of engine compartment. Looked like radiator coolant. Opened hood and saw coolant on top of reservoir. Temperature gauge was normal. Opened reservoir and coolant level was close to normal. Transmission fluid level was also normal.
I started the vehicle again (about 20 minutes after the initial problem) and the brake pedal would compress. I was then able to shift vehicle into drive and could drive home normally. Engine temp was normal. RPM and speed were normal.
What happened? And how do I keep it from happening again?

The Discovery ran fine yesterday. No issues with shifting the transmission or the brake pedal not operating properly.
I checked the coolant level this morning and it was down about a quart... which makes sense considering the puddle that was on the road when I parked the vehicle after the problem on Saturday afternoon.
