Default ABS fault

Ok here is fault No.2 1996 Discover 300tdi Auto

With the ABS light illuminated my ABS system works perfectly. Yes' that's with the ABS light ON it works fine.

With the ABS light OFF (system OK)the ABS system is super sensitive and works when it isn't needed; i.e. on normal gentle stops it cuts in.

At first it went to a highly regarded L/R specialist that diagnosed the air gap via the plug in. They adjusted the air gaps and went through the system. After two visits it's still not fixed.

Recently it went to the L/R dealer that said exactly the same thing, did the same things, and 6 miles out of the dealership exactly the same things went wrong.

Because the system works normally when the ABS light is on I'm thinking of just taking the bulb out !!
Any ideas very greatfully recieved,
Dave.

Personally, I don't really feel I need the ABS that bad, so when mine starts doing things like you've mentioned I'll just yank the fuse.

I too have the fuse pulled for the ABS to disable the system. I do, however, plan to repair the system since on occasion my parents do drive my rover. I know the ABS doesn't work but I feel better if it would work when they drive.

Just so I know what you mean, what does it do when it works perfectly and when it is too sensitive? On my 97, with the ABS light on the ABS does not work. Then when the light would go out the ABS would kick in and nearly prevent the vehicle from stopping. With the light off, on dry roads the ABS would pulse the brakes, or at least one brake where the bad sensor is.

Had my mechanic read my ABS code when the Rover was in for other maintenance and found that there were 2 air gap error codes as well as a fault code for a bad wheel sensor at the left front wheel.

Ok, can I safely take the fuse out and the system will revert to a normal non ABS brake system? I'm happy with that, don't need ABS anyway, just overcomplicates things.
Cheers,
Dave
