Default Catalytic Converters

I just finished putting my 2000 Discovery back together and it just wasn't running right. I couldn't get it to go over 35 mph and looked out the rear view and saw some "chunks" fly out the back. It was pieces of catalytic convertor (honey combing). So it looks like I'm due to replace them. I looked on line at Rovers North where I get a lot of parts and saw the whole assy with the Y-pipe for just over $2,000.00 bucks. My teeth about fell out. Bosch makes a universal cat for about 75 bucks. Any suggestions? Anybody been down this road? What direction did you go?? I don't have 2K for an exhaust system. Thanks folks!!

Just buy some aftermarket ones and have them welded in.
Have you checked www.atlanticbritish.com?

You can go to a local muffler shop and have them install 2 low pressure cats fo around $200 plus.

Thanks for the replies. I've called several of the local muffler shops in my area. I've dealt with several of them over the years having 6 cars (two being vintage classics). They all said all they showed was a direct fit which would cost me about $1200 with labor. No universal fitting ones showed up. Even for me to buy an aftermarket/universal one (about $75 bucks avg price times two) and to have the factory ones cut out and new ones welded in, I was looking at about $400 bucks. And with a universal cat, I may still end up with an engine code. So I ended up buying the whole "Y" assy (direct fit) in stainless with the cats and fittings for the O2 sensors for $495.00 which did include the shipping. I removed the old equipment and installed the replacement "Y" pipe with the catalytic converters and also replaced all 4 O2 sensors. Not too bad of a job. I would go this route if someone else has the same issues as I did.
