hey, i have a 97 discovery. My check engine light is on. Any suggestions on what it could mean?

Yeah, you have A problem with your engine. Got A code # ? Could be anything.

You need A scan tool to pull the codes from the vehicle. They are universal so any shop can read them for you. Or you can buy A OBDII ( On Board Diagnostics version 2 ) reader from A auto parts place for $40.

just go to auto zone, they will scan it for free and tell you the code # and the actual code.
