Default check engine light

1996 disco 1, gas
my check engine light came on and from a generic code reader it said "multiple engine misfire". i could not figure out what was wrong bc just about everything has been changed recently. When refilling on gas i realized i had lost my gas cap somewhere and a mechanic friend of mine said this could cause the check engine light to come on because of the evap sensors or something like that. Does this sound right to anyone, any help is appreciated

Nope. A missing gas cap will not cause A engine misfire code.

engine lights with a multiple misfire fault on those vehicles are usually caused by bad spark plug wires, exhaust valves getting stuck with carbon build up,or even the reluctor ring on the fly wheel having bent teeth.

no gas cap or loose or bad gas cap will give a "evap sys. leak" code. YES it could cause the check engine light to come one, BUT it will not give a "engine misfire" code.
