Default Defender Td5 Starting Problem

Hi all,

last few months i´ve been bagging my head on the wall as i cannot find the cause of my problem.

i got a 2002 defender Td5. sometimes it is difficult to start. the weather or time of the day has nothing to do with it.
sometimes it will start in a cold morning by the first turn of the starter motor but at noon it will start at 2nd or 3rd attempt (if i am lucky).

i´ve been to the mechanic and checked the ECU using aland rover diagnostics with no problem reported. i have elrectrical installation and battery check with no error.
i have changed the ejector harness just to be sure.

if it was a sensor issue it should show an alarm on diagnostics, right?

the only thing that i noticed (i am not sure if it was just luck), when it had difficulty in starting, if i pushed down the fuel pump replay while starting it was ok.

what i am not sure about is if the fuel pump and main relay are correct. as i got the car second hand, i think they have been changed as they have "Ford" brand on them. (land rover / bmw used ford parts?)

did any1 have the same strange starting problem?

can any1 confirm which are the correct replays for fuel pump and main relay?

The people on this forum are primarily US based where the TD5 was never imported.
Here's a good forum in the UK where you'll find more TD5 owners.

Americans don't like economical vehicles, plus the EPA restrictions.

Bonjour Ouranios !

From where are you ?
Try to contact Mike à britrest.com.
Mike (in Quebec, Canada) knows Td5 Defender vehicles. He did some rebuilding of 2 or 3 Td5 Defender 110 in the last years. He is also doing maintenance of these Defenders.
Right now, Mike is in UK but he should come back In Canada next april with containers full of parts. Try to contact him now with e-mail.

Vagabond, Defender 110 Td5 - Discovery Series I.
