Though I don't see any indication that someone's modded it to reenable the CDL and it doesn't have the appropriate transfer case shifter, the CDL light on the dash of my newly bought D2 is in fact lit.

Any thoughts on where I should check first to figure out why?

(The SES light is on too, and I have not yet had it to the dealer to figure out why. I do *plan* to buy that single-vehicle OBD interface that's about, what, $600 -- who makes that, again? -- but I only just got the car itself yesterday... :-)

 

The CDL was in fact engaged; the dealer flipped it off for me while inspecting, and it was noticeably easier to corner. :-)
