disco busted again
so i am having alot of problems with my disco 1. it is a 97. i replaced the tires. alternator......twice. thermostat and gasket. water pump. now the timing cover gasket is bad. wtf. so it has over heated like 50 times. yet some how this amazing truck just keeps going! it wont stop! i need to fix it though. so i am looking at doing the timing while im in there anyway. truck has 180k. any ideas on what else i should do while its apart? any special tools need or anything to do the job?
also i have no heat. i bought it with the heater bypassed and i hooked it back up. tried to use a bottle of heater core leak repair but it didn't fix it. if i have the heater hooked up it over heats. so i un hooked it again. im freezing my rear off. were can i find a detailed walk threw with pics on how to replace the heater core?

With respect first fix the leak at the timing case---and maybe you will resolve the heater core problem, but you shouldn't use a "stop leak"! It will cause all sorts of problems! With one exception however; BG Coolant Leak Stop is made from a Brazilian pepper which is organic will seal the leak but can be flushed out with clean water.
The timing case gasket at 180K will be brittle so its no surprise you now have a leak after replacing the water pump, and installing all the bolts back!! Simply because sometimes people don't always put them all back! A couple are hidden!
To remove the timing case you will have to drop the pan. Sealed up with silicon sealant.
You will need a new crankshaft pulley seal--the genuine one now in Viton, a brown/black seal, whereas most of the aftermarket are still neoprene. (black)
At 180K the crankshaft pulley will be tram lined and using it with a new seal will just tear it up. Purchase a Speedysleeve to recover the pulley and say goodbye to leaks in that area.
With the pan down you can clean all the crud deposit out of the pan floor and clean the suction strainer tube.
Most likely the timing chain and gears will be worn so a timing chain kit is prudent have on hand and very easy to install--just follow the timing marks.
To re-fit everything use Apache shellac sealant on the faces and just be careful as you bolt up the long 5/16 UNC bolts which are through bolts screwed into the block sandwiching the water pump in place.
If the serpentine belt tensioner is original change it, it way have been the cause of the original water pump failure. Supposed to be changed at 100K tops.
