Default Discovery 2 high mileage oil.

Hi all, my Discovery 2 has 250,000kilometers clocked with a current annual mileage of around 5,000k.
The dip stick is clean, emmisions are good and there is no oil loss, plus no drips.
I'm thinking of using Mobil 1 High Mileage oil, would I need to add an additive also?
I would appreciate any advice/suggestions to keep her going.
Thanks.

Rotella 15/40w dino oil works very well in these engines.

FWIW, I use Rotella and supplement the zinc content with STP oil treatment. It seems to work very well on my truck.

Supplement? It already has so much zinc and phosphorus in it that it's not recommended for catalyzed engines. What is the STP doing? I'm not suggesting you're doing anything wrong, just want to learn more.

It will protect the cam and lifters for one. Crower recommends straight 30 oil plus supplements if you run their cams/lifters....obviously that's not gonna happen but I will probably run a supplement every other oil change or so just for good measure.

That's kind of my point. The reason for running the Rotella is for the extra zinc and phosphorus that's in it which will provide additional protection to the spinny bits, to the point that the metals will load up and destroy your cat eventually. Which is also what the STP is adding. As far as I know, adding more only speeds that process of ruining your cat and will not add additional protection of any consequence that's not already provided by the Rotella. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, especially if maintaining a healthy cat isn't a concern. My question is more why would you pay to add more ZDDP if you're already running way more than the recommended PPM.

It is a fair question and one to which I don't have a great answer. Fortunately I am not burning much oil and therefore don't believe I am hurting the cats, though I am sure some is inevitable.

I'd guess that it raises viscosity more than anything else. Even the level of zinc content in STP seems to be a contentious issue so maybe it is just snake oil.
