Explosive Oil Leak with White exhaust
Hello everyone, I have a 2004 Discovery 2 with a 4.6L V8 engine. It is my favorite thing in the world, and sadly yesterday it left me stranded on the interstate for the first time in 140k miles. I was cruising at around 70mph when all of a sudden, I hear a sound similar to that of traction control (when it kicks in off roading) in the engine bay on the side of the driver (basically right in front of me). It goes on for about 2 seconds, then I see in the rear view mirror white smoke coming out of my tailpipe, and lots of it. I pull over, and there is smoke coming from both the engine bay and tailpipe (lots). I smell burning oil. I pop the hood, and move the car over to the grass. At this point, the oil light has come on (it has actually immediately come on when I first saw the smoke out of the tail pipe from what I remember). When I get out, there is a HUGE puddle of oil where I had parked for maybe 30 seconds before moving it to the grass (like a murder scene with a huge puddle of blood, but oil). I go to find out that my entire engine bay is covered in oil (like entirely covered, even the bottom of the hood is splattered with oil). When I look under the vehicle, there is some smoke coming from the middle section of the exhaust, and oil dripping down into the front diff. I was on my way to work, and am going to take a look at it tomorrow where I had it towed, with my tools. I am just wondering what the heck happened to make it do
this. It is well maintained, and I was about to put new O2 sensors on. The engine has the ominous “tick” of a slipped sleeve for about 40k miles, but I was told by the Land Rover specialist to basically drive it till it blew up. So I have originally been thinking this was the sleeve slipping, and consequently the head gasket (?) going out. However the explosive oil thing is not exactly a typical head gasket symptom I do not think, and I haven’t had any issue of “milkshake” oil or coolant. It’s had coolant leaks, but from leaky hoses and I had repaired them. It literally just all happened all of a sudden on the interstate. I also feel like the sound I described hints at something else than a slipped sleeve. Anyways, I’m pretty clueless, and I would like to know at least leads on what to look for tmr when I go to look at it, as it will be a few weeks before a mechanic can. Also, it’s my daily, so I need it back. And tbh, just makes me sad, poor Slippy Sorry for the long paragraph I just was hoping someone could help, thanks!
