OK, first I drove my truck like a madman this afternoon. Revved it like I haven't in awhile, full AC, then stuck myself in traffic. I was feeling free as a bird. As I got very close to my destination the needle started to creep up again. Yup. But....it was noticeably slower, didn't seem to keep escalating like it did and when I turned the AC off it returned to its normal 9 o'clock spot. I'm thinking that if I get through this the new normal may be closer to 8:58.

So, my two thoughts now are that a) my 100% distilled water needs some coolant and Water Wetter and/or b) my AC needs some servicing. Could that do it?

Tomorrow, we will change to 50/50 green w/ WW, fix that heater hose and check out the AC. I've had so much distilled water running through the system that I don't think I need a chemical flush.....do I?

The new fan clutch appears to work well. I think the metal Imperial fan was a reverse fan (which Imperial has for that model) as it was correctly cupped towards the engine but blowing air ineffectively. The arrow indicates direction and was correctly going clockwise (looking from the front of the truck). As soon as we changed it with the original fan it was noticeably blowing hard towards the engine and the air passing into the grill sucked the bag up against it. The original fan while plastic seems super durable so I'll leave that until I solve the overheat problem. I'm not sure I could flip the metal fan over in that space...but I'll check.

Disappointing that I have any problem at all remaining. Encouraged that I do seem to be making progress. No quick fixes here. Whaddayathink?

The direction that the fan blows air toward engine is correct direction. New clutch will blow more air with stock fan than old clutch and stock fan. Betwween heater hose tweak and wetter water you may be in the good, but there is still the possibility of the radiator. How does it do on the highway for extended period?

I haven't done the highway test yet other than jumping on it to go an exit. We'll fix the bypass, tune the AC and change the coolant mix tomorrow and then i'll do the highway/traffic tests.

There was definitely an improvement today.

What is best way to determine performance of radiator? How do I know if I should have it rodded or take the plunge and get a new one? Don't want to do both!

Have it flow tested. See if there is cold spots on it.

ummm..

was correctly going clockwise (looking from the front of the truck).

Might want to check the belt route. Standing at the grill, facing the engine, mine turns anti-clockwise, toward the battery.

whooooooooaaaaaa. confusing.

pic one: imperial fan
pic two: imperial fan (reverse)
pic three: my fan

so it looks like I have the wrong fan and the wrong direction. fyi...belt was put on by local indy Rover shop. i'm going to check belt routing today as fan was definitely moving counter clockwise facing engine.

Local Indy Rover guy swears fan should move counterclockwise looking at front of truck, like it is currently.

Please confirm this is incorrect or correct??

Looks like were back to rodding.

But, fan is spinning counterclockwise looking at front of engine.

Then it is spinning the correct way, facing engine, soinning to your left. In the tech sticky area of the D1 part of the forum is a link to belt route. I suggest people print it out, cut out the drawing, and tape it with clear shipping tape to the fan cowl, or somewhere.
