Fancy Machine Diagnoses My Truck (Piston Ring Leak)
Yeah I'm ballsy, you should know that by now.
One cylinder is not going to have worn out or sticky piston rings while the others are fine.
You would either have one bank that has the same symptoms or the entire engine.
It was not uncommon for one side of a "V" engine to have worn out rings and blow smoke while the other side is perfectly fine.
Older cars that had dual exhaust you could see blue smoke blowing out the passenger side tailpipe but not the other.
Usually caused by the passenger side running to cold and the rings wearing out faster, running to cold of a t-stat is the number one reason for that.
Passenger side of the engine runs colder because the coolant is fresh out of the radiator.
Sticking rings would be caused by oil varnish, again, not going to happen on one cylinder alone, yes it could happen to both rear or the two front cylinders (opposing).
Sticky valves it could happen, but again not likely to be only on one cylinder.
I think it would be the head gasket, for whatever reason, a small crack that only opens up under certain conditions, or whatever, I dont know, but I really really do not think it is a mechanical issue.
I have almost been wrong before, so take this with a grain of salt.

we know you're ballsy but I can't remember you ever being almost wrong.
actually BG makes a product that basically you add it to the oil and run it for ten minutes and then drain and refill. Its called bg 109 Compression in a can. Works too. Part of the demonstration we saw was actually compression readings going up after using the 109.
BG find a shop. Just buy the two cans and add it to the oil run at 1100 rpms for ten minutes and then change the oil.

Sounds like Rislone.
Engine Treatment (p/n 100QR) | Products | Bar's Leaks & Rislone - Premium Automotive Chemicals
But I do agree that BG is a better product.

It's got to be the rings. After all those times of off-roading (creeks) pre-snorkel days I'd be willing to be I got water in the number three cylinder thus leading to scoring of the cylinder and ****ing that ring up. It kills me not knowing the exact reason.
Maybe I'll try that BG stuff..what'll it hurt? Continuation: Just bought a quart for $20 off of eBay. Can't beat that. I'm eager to try it out. All of the forum reviews seemed rather pleased with the product.
