Default Flashing "S" "M" lights + Check Engine Light

Hi ... I've got a problem with My 02' Disco ... here's the story. So earlier this afternoon while in stop and go traffic the car turned off, the check engine light came on as well as the oil light, and battery. Panicked ... I turned the car off, then back on. The lights cleared and on I went. Later this evening, while at a traffic light the car rev'ed the engine a bit and moved forward a tad. Did it twice more before ... while in drive on my way home the car check engine light came on and the "M" and "S" lights all started to blink right after it rev'ed it's self and moved (like before). So I pulled over, turned it off, waited turned it on. NO luck! still there. Now the "D" on the dash is also blinking. CRAP! Got home I was only a 2 miles away, parked. Waited, turned it off, then back on. Now only the check engine light comes on. While driving the 2 miles home the car seemed like it was straining for the right power conversion? It was ok at first but as I got stopped at lights, and had to get going again it wasn't liking it. I remember hearing something about the three amigos, but I remember them to be different lights.

Has anyone out there experienced something like this in the past? Any ideas on what it might be?? Need help! Want to fix my Rover!

Thanks,

Mark

First thing would be to have someone check the voltage across the battery terminals. With the engine off you should be at the high 12.8 plus range, with the engine running no less the 13.6 volts and no more then 14.4 volts.
Go get it checked and get back to us.
Make sure your battery cables are clean and tight.

Mike, thanks I'll look into that. Is the car safe to drive would you say? So that I can take it to a place to get the battery tested?

Don't do too much driving. Make sure if you get out tyo have them do a load test on the battery and alternator.

Hey Mark,
I didn't see your post until I sent Mike a pm (on a different issue) and saw this was in his recent replies. I only check the Discovery section of this board, not the Gen Help section.

So DiscoMike ... Brenton lives near by and so I sought his advice. This evening we replaced the battery, poked around a bit under the hood checked some things out, but didn't do any other changes. Left ... drove home, no problem for um ... 2 miles. Then the same thing happened, "M" "S" and check engine! GREAT! stopped turned it off, back on, cleared. Back on the road then the famed three amigos decided to visit my dash board, while at a traffic light. Got through the light, and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree! Three amigo's, check engine/service soon, "M", "S" and the flashing D! Sweet! Stopped, turned the car off, back on, "service engine soon" is now the only light on the dash. drove the rest of the way home (3ish miles) in 3rd. No other lights went on. Got home started and stopped the car a few times, and the "service engine soon" light is still blaring on my dash ... thoughts? Its time to take the trip to the dealership and have them read the codes? Brenton mentioned that he has heard sometimes it takes time for the car to "accept" the new battery/changes. That after 100 miles or so everything is good again. Any rate, any thoughts you might have on my Christmas Tree light dash board would be greatly appreciated!

Right so it was the battery cables not being connected all the way to the battery! Spot on. Got it fixed and a new crank sensor (apparently it went bad while at the shop). So the rover is back on the move again. Thanks for the help Brenton, and Disco Mike
