Default Gear oil

Hey folks,

I'm new to the site and am seeking some friendly advice and/or input. I have a 1996 LR Disco and need to change the gear oil in the T-case and diffs. From what I have been reading, it only takes GL-4. What options do I have in lieu of the Red Line or Sta-Lube stuff? Is there a newer oil that the chain stores carry that is acceptable? This oil is very expesive and I don't think the Disco is going to last much longer to be investing too much into her. Any input on this would be awesome!

Thanks everyone,

Rob in PA

GL-4 is difficult to find these days, most everyone only sells GL-5 in the US.
CRC/Sta-Lube has some 85W90.

But I've read that the shock loading additives in GL-5 have changed in the past years such that they are no longer damaging to brass/bronze components.

Some GL-5's are also GL-4 rated, read the label.
Wal-Marts brand is the last time I checked.

Nearly all, or maybe even all, GL-5 is GL-4 rated, but that's for the lubricity I think.
