Default HARD TO START

Hi, New to forum but not new to problems with my 95 disco.
Very hard to start, takes 3 or 4 tries and the only way to get
it going is holding pedal to the floor. Then while driving it
sometimes gets too quiet and will stall and then take a while
it start again. If it sits for a day, it will start up with less
effort the next day. Check Engine light is on, dealer said
this would not cause the car any problems (!!??) There is
a little smoke that comes out after getting it started.
I want to sell the car but need to correct this starting
problem first. Any help will be appreciated. ONE MORE
QUESTION - I have read that nobody replaces Oxy.
Sensors - but out of curiosity, how many are there on a
95 Disco?

first find another dealer. Any dealer that will tell you that a car stalling on the highway is not a problem is not hearing what you are saying. The start thing has other questions. The first thing is the throttle body. The pushing the rover petal to the floor to start is not a good thing. The stalling on the road sounds like a sensor in the ignition system, or the fuel management system. If possible I would get it put on the diagnostic computer at a dealer. I have a 96 disco and it can be quirky. It is a good thing you are doing to get it worked out before you sell it. Hope it will help. gotta love a rover. duboff. don't have a clue about the o2 sensor. sorry.

Default RE: HARD TO START

the 98 disco i just bought was a little rough to start and felt like it missed sometimes. so i replaced the battery with an optima red top, completely cleaned the terminals, took the mas air flow meter off the truck and cleaned it with electrical parts cleaner, cleaned the connection to the mas air flow meter with electrical parts cleaner, replaced the spark plugs (bosch platinum +4), cleaned the throttle body and butterfly, put diaelectric grease on all the plug wires and mass air flow conection, and the truck starts and runs smoother than ever. while i was in there i also cleaned up all the grease/oil/dirt i could get to. i spent roughly 4 hours working on the truck and aproximatley $180 in parts.

Check your earth connections, sounds like corrosion on the earth terminals... people always seem to look for the most expensive way to fix a car first... when often it is something as simple as a faulty earth.
