Default heater blower freelander

2002 lr freelander

my fan stopped working a few weeks ago , it slowly hummed itself to stopping

checked fuses ok
pulled heater blower out and wd40 / compressed air .
replaced ran great for a while ..

repeat also checked the relay at back of air duct ok

put back and it runs great for a while then fades to grey .
it will restart after a while ...

what can this possibly be ?

from a heater blower standpoint, sounds like bearings beginning to sieze up. Be sure to have some Mallox close by when you get the price for a new one. Not sure how widespread pre-owned units would be.

leaking heater core leaking coolant onto the blower fan causing it to go bad. you will have to pull the dash to replace both. And don't try sealant or else the motor will blow up on you.

If you can access the connector, is there voltage going toward the motor? If yes, the motor is problem, if not, part of problem could be "upstream".

Addition - if you have a meter that can read enough amps to handle the motor, you can insert meter in series at the resistor pack. A decrease is amps as motor slows indicates a high resistance building up, reducing the current. Could be brushes, connections, etc. An increase in current indicates increased load (bearing starting to sieze). All of this is not much to look at, you have to open the motor to fix either. So if you have 12 volts headed toward motor, and it slows down and stops, time to rebuild or replace. A small motor shop might be able to repair for less than a new one.

Loose ground wire, bad switch, or dying motor--none of them cheap. They're hard to reach, too. This is one job I'd give to an auto electrical specialist, since the diagnosis from anyone else would cost a bundle. The specialists know just what to look for.

look on the blower motor, there should be a pink coolant running down it.

Default voltage ..

finally giving up and buying a new blower ..

there is solid voltage going to motor .

played around with it today ....when i wiggled the power cable it rattled and hummed .

yes there is a smear of orange coolant on the outer casing but its nowhere near the electrical terminal or the motor itself .

i guess i should replace the heater blower and hope it lasts 6 months , that is about the life of the car as i am going to upgrade next spring ...

thanks for help guys

car will overheat on you before hand. replace the heater core or else the blower will stop immediately. they don't last long with coolant dripping into them.
